AgentPhone vs Campfire SMS

One gives your agent a phone number. The other lets your agent text you.

AgentPhone gives your AI agent its own phone number, so people and services can call or text it and it can reach them. Campfire SMS works in the other direction: the agent you already run texts you when it needs an answer or has a result, and you reply from your normal SMS inbox. Pick by who needs to reach whom.

Two different directions

AgentPhone describes itself as phone numbers for AI agents: "AgentPhone gives your AI its own phone number." You provision a number through the API, and voice calls and messages reach your agent through one webhook. Incoming calls are transcribed in real time, and AgentPhone handles the speech when your agent replies with text. See AgentPhone's homepage.

Campfire SMS is a hosted two-way SMS bridge between you and your agent. It doesn't give the agent a number for other people to reach. It lets Codex, Claude Code, or another connected agent send you a question or a result, and it returns your reply to that agent.

Choose AgentPhone if…

  • Customers or other people need to reach your agent. A receptionist, a sales follow-up line, or any agent that needs a number people can call or text.
  • You need voice. AgentPhone handles inbound and outbound calls, with real-time transcription and text-to-speech.
  • Your agent needs a verification inbox. AgentPhone pitches a "2FA and verification inbox for autonomous agents" so an agent can receive codes on its own number.
  • You're building for your own customers. Its pricing page lists sub-accounts with their own numbers and usage on one bill.
  • You want more channels. It offers iMessage lines, with WhatsApp and RCS listed as beta.

AgentPhone's FAQ also lists on-call engineering flows and coding agents among its use cases. If you want a coding agent with its own reachable number, it is a reasonable fit.

Choose Campfire SMS if…

  • You want the agent you already run (Codex, Claude Code, Grok Bot, OpenCode, or Grok Build) to text you when it needs an answer or has a result.
  • You want to reply from your normal SMS inbox, on an iPhone or an Android phone, with no app to install.
  • You don't want to rent a number, host a webhook, or keep a gateway device running.
  • You are the only person the agent needs to reach. Campfire SMS keeps the exchange between you and your agent.

Setup is three steps: sign up at campfiresms.com, verify your phone (40 free texts, no card), and run the one-time install command from your account. Then send a test text and reply. See the setup guide for each agent.

One practical difference: AgentPhone's pricing FAQ notes that US numbers that send texts have to be registered with the carriers, which you file from its dashboard. With Campfire SMS there is no number of your own to register.

What Campfire SMS does not do

Campfire SMS does not take calls, receive verification codes for your agent, or give it a number that customers can text.

  • Local agents need a live session. Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, Grok Build, and other local agents need the computer awake and online and the session running. Campfire SMS does not wake a stopped local session. Grok Bot is the exception: an active webhook routine can start it in the cloud when you text.
  • Replies don't grant new permissions. A text can steer the task, but the agent keeps the permissions it already had. Native approvals stay in the agent's own interface.
  • SMS isn't end-to-end encrypted. Don't text secrets, and keep sensitive detail on the computer.

Try a text and a reply

Campfire SMS starts with 40 free messages after phone verification. No card required. The monthly plan is $8 for 500 messages, and one-time packs are available. See current pricing and message counting. Your agent's own costs are separate.

Start with a harmless exchange: ask your agent to text you a short status, reply with a question, and check that it reads your exact reply and answers.
