Messaging comparison

Photon vs Campfire SMS

Already have an agent and a workspace? Add texting to the work you already do.

Campfire SMS is a focused option for reaching your existing coding agent by SMS. Photon is a broader messaging SDK and managed channel platform. Choose based on whether you want to connect an existing workflow or build a messaging application.

A Photon alternative for an existing workflow

If Codex or Claude Code already works in your repo, you may only need a way to answer it after leaving the computer. Campfire SMS connects that environment to your normal text inbox. You do not create a Campfire SMS project, import the repository, or adopt another coding interface.

There is still setup: create a Campfire SMS account, verify your phone, run the local connector installation, and configure your agent's messaging behavior. After that, the work stays with the agent and tools you already use.

Photon's project does not mean your code must live there

Photon's quickstart uses a project ID and secret from its dashboard. That adds a project and provider configuration to the messaging setup. Spectrum can also run inside an application you own, so a blanket claim that Photon forces all work onto its platform would be inaccurate.

The Photon + Render Codex example takes a different route: deploy a hosted agent and configure it for phone access. Campfire SMS's local route is useful when you already have a working environment and want a small addition to it.

Choose the workflow you actually need

Choose Photon when you are building a messaging product, need iMessage or multiple channel providers, or want to integrate a messaging SDK into your application. Its hosted Codex example is also relevant if you want a separate cloud runtime.

Choose Campfire SMS when you want short updates and replies from an existing Codex, Claude Code, or compatible agent without creating a separate agent app. You retain the current workspace, model, tools, and native permissions.

For detailed session inspection, a native remote interface, SSH, or remote desktop may fit better than either short-message workflow.

Try the existing-agent route

Follow the Codex SMS walkthrough or Claude Code SMS walkthrough. Connect the computer already doing the work and test a message, reply, retrieval, acknowledgement, and confirmation.

Campfire SMS starts with 40 free messages after phone verification. The monthly plan is $8 for 500 messages; one-time packs are available. See current pricing and message counting. Your existing agent's costs are separate.

Common questions

Is Campfire SMS an alternative to Photon?

For two-way SMS with an existing coding agent, it is a focused alternative. It does not provide Photon's full channel platform or messaging SDK.

Does Photon require moving all work onto its platform?

No. Its quickstart uses project credentials, but Spectrum can be integrated into your own application. The Render example provisions a separate hosted Codex environment.

Does Campfire SMS require creating a coding project?

No. Verify your phone and connect your agent's existing computer or VM. Your code and development workflow stay in their current environment.
