A reminder reaches you. A conversation moves the task forward.
Both products address a familiar moment: you leave the computer, and your agent has something worth telling you. The choice depends on what you need next.
NudgeBell takes responsibility for a scheduled reminder after the agent creates it. Campfire SMS connects your normal SMS inbox to the agent's existing workspace, so a reply such as “focus on migration risks” can become input to the task.
Campfire SMS is a NudgeBell alternative for people looking for two-way agent SMS. A reminder service remains the better fit when the goal is to keep notifying you until you acknowledge a deadline.
Compare the notification and reply paths
| What you need | NudgeBell | Campfire SMS |
|---|---|---|
| Primary workflow | Schedule a reminder and escalation chain. | Send agent updates and retrieve human SMS replies. |
| Channels | Email, WhatsApp, SMS, phone calls. | SMS in your usual text inbox. |
| Human response | Acknowledgment and its status. | The content of your reply goes back to the connected agent. |
| After a local session ends | Created reminders continue on its servers. | Local work needs a running agent and an awake, online computer. |
| Cloud behavior | Runs the reminder lifecycle. | Configured Grok Bot webhook wake can start a cloud routine on an incoming SMS. |
| Typical next step | Confirm you saw the reminder. | Clarify a question or request the next task step within the agent's existing permissions. |

Acknowledgment and task input are different
NudgeBell's documentation says acknowledgment is human-only. Its published tools create, inspect, pause, and cancel reminders. They expose acknowledgment status, rather than a general inbox of human replies. See the documented MCP tools.
That makes a future review reminder useful: it can keep trying to reach you. Campfire SMS handles a different exchange: the agent asks which part of a PR to summarize, you text an answer, and it uses that answer in the workspace it already has.
An acknowledgment can also be useful to an agent that checks its status. Our comparison concerns the published reply interface; it does not rule out custom integrations or future NudgeBell features.
Pick the moment you need to handle
- A deadline tomorrow: choose persistent scheduling and escalation when the delivery must outlive today's session.
- A build finishes while you are out: use a build completion text and reply with what to check next.
- A pull request is ready: use PR notifications to request a summary before opening the full review.
- An agent needs clarification: answer the question by SMS so it can continue within the agreed task.
You can use a reminder service alongside Campfire SMS when you need both a future nudge and a conversation about active work.
Make the runtime part of the choice
For local Codex, Claude Code, or another compatible agent, keep the agent running and its computer awake and online. Installing Campfire SMS does not start a stopped local session.
For an incoming text that starts work while your PC is off, Campfire SMS supports Grok Bot with an active webhook routine. The cloud agent supplies the task execution. Campfire SMS supplies messaging and wake delivery.
SMS task instructions use the agent's existing permissions. Native runtime approvals stay in the agent's own interface.
Try a text and a reply
Create your Campfire SMS account and verify your phone, then follow the setup route for your agent. Keep the repository, tools, and coding environment you already use.
Start with a harmless exchange: ask the agent to text a short task summary, reply “give me the next step,” and confirm that the agent retrieves your exact reply and responds. See current pricing and message counting before a longer session.
Common questions
Is Campfire SMS a NudgeBell alternative?
For two-way SMS with an existing agent, yes. For recurring scheduled reminders and escalation through calls, email, or WhatsApp, NudgeBell serves a different need.
Can NudgeBell tell an agent that I acknowledged a reminder?
Yes. Its documented reminder status exposes acknowledgment. The published API does not describe a general inbox that returns arbitrary SMS reply content to the originating agent.
Can Campfire SMS keep a local agent working after I close its computer?
Local work requires the agent and computer to stay available. Grok Bot webhook wake is the separate cloud setup for incoming texts while your PC is off.
